State of Mexico. — On Wednesday, November 20, a multi-vehicle collision occurred along the Mexico–Querétaro Highway, near kilometer 059+000 in the municipality of Huehuetoca, State of Mexico.
According to initial reports, the incident involved a tractor-trailer that was unable to stop in time, resulting in a chain-reaction crash involving several other vehicles traveling in the same direction. Witnesses at the scene described the moment as “sudden and chaotic,” as cars ahead attempted to swerve to avoid impact.
Due to the force of the collision, the trailer came to rest sideways across the highway, blocking all three north-south lanes and immediately disrupting traffic flow. Within minutes, long lines of vehicles began to form, stretching for several kilometers in both directions.
Emergency services, including paramedics, firefighters, and members of the National Guard, quickly arrived at the scene to assist those involved. Authorities confirmed that several people sustained minor injuries, and were treated on-site, while a few others were transported to nearby hospitals for further evaluation. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported so far.
According to preliminary investigations, the driver of the trailer may have experienced brake failure while descending a slight slope in the area, which made it impossible to stop in time. However, officials have stated that mechanical failure, driver fatigue, and excessive speed are all being considered as potential contributing factors.
Traffic police implemented an immediate diversion route, redirecting vehicles through alternate roads to reduce congestion and allow the towing of the damaged trailer. Cleanup crews worked for several hours to remove debris and spilled cargo from the asphalt to ensure safe passage once the lanes could be reopened.
Witnesses shared videos and photos on social media showing the massive trailer lying across the road, surrounded by smaller vehicles with visible damage. “It looked like a scene from a movie,” one driver commented. “Everything happened in seconds — you could hear brakes screeching and people shouting.”
Authorities urged drivers to exercise caution when traveling along that stretch of the Mexico–Querétaro Highway, which has been the scene of several similar accidents in recent months due to heavy freight traffic and poor visibility during early morning hours.
By late afternoon, two of the three lanes were reopened, though traffic remained slow as crews continued to inspect the site for any remaining hazards. Officials have promised a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident and to prevent similar events in the future.
