The Carter estate loomed at the city’s edge like a monument to wealth. Marble pillars framed the grand entrance, gardens stretched in perfect symmetry—but inside, cracks no fortune could hide were spreading.
On a blistering summer afternoon, six-year-old Sophie Carter sat trapped in her father’s Mercedes, her small body wilting under the merciless heat. Her fists beat desperately against the tinted glass. “Mommy! Help me!” Her golden hair clung to her forehead; her pale-yellow dress stuck to her skin, drenched in sweat.
Claudia Carter, her stepmother, stood on the marble steps, immaculate as always—silk dress shimmering, red stilettos clicking, posture perfect. For a heartbeat, her eyes met Sophie’s pleading gaze. Then a faint smirk. With a deliberate click, she locked the doors and turned toward the mansion.
It was no accident. Sophie knew the sharpness in Claudia’s eyes. This was punishment.
Elena, the housemaid, had worked for the Carters for five years—long enough to know Sophie better than anyone. She heard the faint thump from the car, recognized the urgency, and froze.
Sophie’s little hands pressed against the window, gasping for air.
“Miss Sophie!” Elena screamed, dropping her basket of sheets. She ran, yanking at the handle. Locked. The heat seared her skin even before she touched the glass.
“Stay awake, sweetheart! I’ll get you out!”
Elena’s hands shook as she scanned the driveway. A jagged rock near a garden bed caught her eye. She grabbed it, whispered, “Forgive me, baby…”
Before she could strike, a silver BMW rolled in. Daniel Carter stepped out, briefcase in hand. His eyes froze on Sophie.
“What the hell—?” He dropped the briefcase, ran.
“She’s locked in! She can’t breathe!” Elena sobbed.
Daniel slammed his palms against the glass. “Sophie! Daddy’s here! Hold on!”
Elena pointed toward the mansion. “Claudia… she took the keys. She saw her. She never came back.”
Daniel snatched the rock and swung. Crack! Crack! The glass splintered. One final strike—the door yielded. He pulled Sophie into his arms.
“Daddy’s here,” he whispered, tears streaking his face. “You’re safe now.”
Sophie clung weakly. “She left me there, Daddy. I couldn’t breathe…”
Daniel’s chest tightened with rage. “You’re certain she had the keys?”
Elena nodded, hands trembling.
The front door creaked open. Claudia emerged, silk flowing, sunglasses perched atop her head, calm as ever. She surveyed the shattered glass, Elena’s bleeding hands, Daniel clutching Sophie. Her lips curled.
“What’s all this noise?”
“You left her locked in the car?!” Daniel’s voice shook with fury.
Claudia tilted her head. “Don’t be dramatic. I must have forgotten.”
“Forgotten?” Elena’s voice cracked.
Claudia smirked. “And what would you know? You’re just the help.”
Daniel’s jaw clenched until his teeth ached. “Claudia… be very careful.”
Claudia only shrugged, gazing toward the horizon. Daniel knew—this was only the beginning.
