Uncle left with third-degree burn!

A 20-year-old man from Aberdeen, Washington, is being hailed as a real-life hero after risking his life to save his eight-year-old niece from a burning home. The courageous act left him with severe burns, but ultimately saved a young girl’s life.

The fire broke out in the early morning at a family home shared by seven people, including Derrick Byrd, his sister Kayla, and her three children—Junior, Royce, and Mercedes. What started as a normal night quickly turned into a nightmare as flames engulfed the two-story house.

Neighbors reported hearing screams and seeing the fire spread rapidly. Inside, chaos reigned as the family struggled to escape. Kayla managed to get her two sons to a second-floor window and urged them to jump. Derrick stood below, ready to catch them.

“I caught Junior and Royce when they jumped,” Derrick later told KOMO-TV. “But Mercedes… she froze. She saw her mom fall, and she just couldn’t move.”

Without hesitation, Derrick ran back into the inferno. The stairwell was engulfed, thick smoke filled the rooms, but he knew his niece was still inside.

“I could feel it burning me,” he said. “But I didn’t care. I just kept going.”

Inside, he found Mercedes trapped in a corner, her face streaked with soot and tears. Derrick scooped her up, wrapped his own shirt around her face to shield her from smoke, and carried her toward the exit, ignoring the intense pain from his own burns.

By the time they reached safety, Derrick’s back, arms, and face were badly burned. He refused treatment until he was sure Mercedes was okay. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital, where he was treated for second- and third-degree burns.

When asked if he regretted risking his life, Derrick said, “Even though I got burnt, I really didn’t care. I’d rather get burnt than her. She’s young—she’s still got her whole life ahead of her.”

Friends and neighbors weren’t surprised by Derrick’s bravery, describing him as selfless and fiercely protective of his family. Fire investigators later confirmed the fire likely started on the first floor due to an electrical issue, and officials said Derrick’s quick action prevented a tragedy.

“He saved her life,” a firefighter said. “By the time we arrived, the fire was too dangerous to go back in. What he did took guts most people don’t have.”

Kayla, Derrick’s sister, remained by his side in the hospital, overwhelmed with gratitude. “He didn’t even think about himself,” she said through tears. “I’ll never be able to thank him enough for saving my baby.”

Despite his burns and ongoing treatments, Derrick remained humble. “I can’t say I’m a hero,” he told reporters. “I just did what anyone would do for their family.” Doctors said his recovery will take months, including skin grafts, but his prognosis is good.

The community rallied around him, raising funds for his medical bills and the damaged home. Local firefighters visited, calling him “the definition of courage.” Meanwhile, Mercedes regularly visits Derrick, bringing handmade cards that declare, “Uncle Derrick is my hero.”

The family has temporarily moved in with relatives while they rebuild, and Kayla says the experience has given her a new perspective. “We lost a lot that night—but we didn’t lose each other. That’s because of Derrick.”

Derrick continues to heal, focusing on being with his family rather than his scars. “It’s just skin,” he says. “Skin grows back. What matters is that Mercedes is safe.”

When asked about his mindset during the fire, Derrick’s response was simple: “There wasn’t time to think. I just knew she needed me.”

In a world often filled with division, Derrick Byrd’s bravery stands as a reminder that true heroism is quiet, instinctive, and born of love. His burns may fade, but the life he saved—and the courage he showed—will be remembered forever.
